CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Anna Sasaki
Age: 12
Canon: When Marnie Was There (the anime, not the book)
Canon Point: Just before Sayaka finds her in the forest
Character Information:
Anna only has vague recollections of her past. Her parents died young in a car crash while she was staying with her grandmother. Her grandmother, even though she wasn't terribly old at that point, couldn't handle the stress of her only child dying passed away only a year later. Anna was three and sent into foster care. Since no relatives would take her, eventually the Sasaki family end up as her foster family.
Yoriko Sasaki, Anna's foster mother, took the lead in rearing the young child. According to Mrs. Oiwa, Yoriko would call constantly asking for advice since Mrs. Oiwa had raised a daughter already and Anna was Yoriko's first. The Sasakis seem to have really taken great pride in their adopted daughter: they had pictures of young Anna in the apartment but also sent copies to the Oiwas. Yoriko taught her how to cook and even splurged a little in giving her more professional colored pencils for her drawings.
For a long time it seemed that Anna was taking well to being adopted. She was an expressive, happy child. Then things turned for the worse. Anna grew old enough to realize that she was different than the other children in her class and the apartment block. Not only that, she discovered that the government was sending subsidies to the Sasakis to cover her living costs. Yoriko had given the pencils to her just after this discovery.
This only helped to fuel what seemed to be an ongoing depression. Anna seemed to be an introvert already and the discovery only made her withdraw almost completely. Yoriko describes her natural expression as if Anna was withholding her emotions completely. While Anna wasn't being obviously bullied in school, she made no attempt at making friends either. She just ignored the other girls the best she could and they did the same.
All of this stress that Anna was holding in finally was let out when she had a major asthma attack during school. This was the major deciding factor in Yoriko sending Anna away the live with the Oiwas over the summer, since they lived in a far more rural environment than Sapporo.
